{"id":47,"date":"2016-12-17T00:43:13","date_gmt":"2016-12-16T13:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/makeitso.projectroom.com\/?p=47"},"modified":"2017-01-23T11:17:11","modified_gmt":"2017-01-23T00:17:11","slug":"fun-stuff-round-mt-vic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/makeitso.projectroom.com\/?p=47","title":{"rendered":"Explore Mt Vic &#038; nearby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the ever growing list of interesting things to do round or near Mt Vic if you come up for the Friday as well or arrive early and want to see the sights (independently of what&#8217;s in the main\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/makeitso.projectroom.com\/?p=118\">itinerary<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>A stack of bush walks<\/strong> including the Little Zig Zag and the bushrangers cave, Clarence Dam, and Pulpit Rock reserve. You can also visit the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservationhut.com.au\/\">Conservation Hut<\/a><\/strong> for interpretive information, a cuppa and views from the nearby lookout. Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildwalks.com\/\">wild walks website<\/a> for a great selection of local walks, but bear in mind its Easter so the very popular ones we would normally recommend might be crowded (but if you come before Easter are well worth trekking:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpass.com.au\/\">National Pass<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(returning\u00a0via the undercliff track),\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au\/things-to-do\/Walking-tracks\/Grand-Canyon-track\">Grand Canyon<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au\/things-to-do\/Walking-tracks\/wentworth-falls-track\">Wentworth Falls<\/a><\/strong> track to name a few). * We are probably going to take a walk to Victoria Falls and Asgard mine on Easter Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clarence Dam<\/strong>. It&#8217;s unlikely to be hot enough to swim&#8230; but if you feel a hankering to go to the local beach, it&#8217;s worth it for walks and views. Best waterhole ever (listed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redbull.com\/au\/en\/adventure\/stories\/1331830655086\/swimming-holes-sydney-best-wild-swimming-spots\">Red Bull&#8217;s top wild swimming spots<\/a>). It is a well kept locals secret hideaway so ask us for instructions on how to get there (as there&#8217;s no map online).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mountvictoriamuseum.info\/\">Excellent Historical Society <strong>Museum<\/strong><\/a> in the old Mt Vic railway station (closed Good Friday).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluemts.com.au\/mountvic\/default.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Mt Vic Flicks<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 the local cinema is a real old fashioned gem with leather seats and choc top icecream. Highly recommended!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au\/visit-a-park\/parks\/Hartley-Historic-Site\">Hartley Village<\/a> &#8211; this is a historic village at the bottom of Mt Victoria Pass. Ye Olde Buildings have interpretive signage, and there&#8217;s a bonza metal-arts studio called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talismangallery.com.au\/\">Talisman Gallery<\/a> and a short but excellent river boardwalk. It&#8217;s only another 15K or so to Lithgow too.<\/p>\n<p>Lithgow area &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lithgow-tourism.com\/blast.htm\">Blast Furnace Park<\/a>\u00a0contains the ruins of Australia&#8217;s first iron smelter. Great for photographers. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lithgow-tourism.com\/statemin.htm\">State Mine Heritage Park<\/a> offers tours and is suitably industrial! Also industrial: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lithgow-tourism.com\/samuseum.htm\">Small Arms Museum<\/a>. A little more genteel is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lithgow-tourism.com\/eskbank.htm\">Eskbank House<\/a>, which has lovely explorable grounds. Check out all the Lithgow options <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lithgow-tourism.com\/lithgow1.htm\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Horse riding in the Megalong Valley (google it, heaps of options), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centennialglenstables.com\/SulkyRides.html\">Sulky rides<\/a> at Blackheath.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bygonebeautys.com.au\/\">Bygone Beauties<\/a> &#8211; the <strong>Teapot Museum<\/strong>, has thousands of teapots and does a fab devonshire tea (Closed on Good Friday).\u00a0Cindi will be taking a group here on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluemountainsbotanicgarden.com.au\/\">Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens<\/a> &#8211; Not just beautiful&#8230; it&#8217;s spectacular. It&#8217;s open on Good Friday, and features\u00a0The Botanists Way Discovery Centre for\u00a0&#8220;tales of daring and discovery, botany, canyons and of the traditional custodians, the Darug&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Tarana Village and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oberonaustralia.com.au\/visitor-information\/national-parks\/evans-crown-tarana\/\">Evans Crown walk<\/a>. It&#8217;s a bit of a drive but as a day trip it&#8217;s worth it. The Tarana village has a cute pub, and the cafe *might* be open. There&#8217;s fishing in the nearby lake, and the Evans Crown walk is very interesting for the granite tor rock formations. Take a picnic!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiquetoys.com.au\/\">Planes Trains and Automobiles<\/a> \u2013 the absolutely cool museum\/shop of old toy trains and Antique Toys\u2026 its on the Great Western Highway at Blackheath. And if you love games shops you would also appreciate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afternoonified.com.au\/\">Afternoonified<\/a>, the steampunk gameshop in Halfpenny lane, Katoomba.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rhodogarden.org.au\/\">Rhododendron Gardens at Blackheath<\/a> &#8211; ok so not the right time of year for the Rhodo flowers, but nevertheless very beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/things-to-do\/tours\/blue-mountain-bikes-australia\">Bicycle riding <\/a>(bike hire can be organised in advance)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.victorytheatre.com.au\/\">Victory Theatre Antiques \u2013 cafe and antiques at Blackheath<\/a>\u00a0is well worth a visit, both for the cafe and for the amazing collection of vintage goods on sale; and its on the main street of Blackheath &#8211; great Mountains ambience overall.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of Antique shops (some might not be open Good Friday): for example\u00a0<strong>Cob Webs<\/strong> \u2013 a cool antique store on the Great Western Highway near Mt Vic. Some links here:\u00a0https:\/\/heyantiques.com.au\/Blackheath\/<\/p>\n<p>Galleries at Blackheath and Katoomba (too many to mention all, but options are Hat Hill gallery, Blackheath Gallery, and the regional Cultural Centre at Katoomba)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scenicworld.com.au\/category\/suggested-itineraries\/\">Scenic World at Katoomba<\/a>, features a cable ride from one cliff face to another&#8230; with a clear floor to look down at the trees tooooo far below!
